Visualizing African Perceptions of Corruption
and Their Influence on Development

Project Overview

  • What and Why:
  • This visualization analyses and visualizes corruption perceptions in sub-Saharan Africa to answer questions about other data:

What correlations can be found between corruption and:
    • economic growth (GDP)
    • life expectancy
    • population
    • etc. across different countries within Africa and in different years from 1998 - 2008.

  • Data Sources:
  • My data was acquired from a couple of sources to bring it together.

    • Firstly, the Corruption Perceptions Index from Transparency International's site here.
    • A number of World Bank development indicators off their site here.
    • Information about each sub-Saharan African country had to be inputed by me using a processing sketch and tracing out the borders to later be used as vertices in shapes.

    • Target audience:
    • This visualization was targeted at anyone interested in the influence of corruption perceptions or its levels across countries at any time would find this interesting, if not useful.

    Visualization Approach

Each country is represented on a map of Africa color coded over a red to green scale for low to high CPI levels.

The top 5 and bottom 5 countries in terms of CPI for the currently selected year are represented in the top left hand corner with the same color codings, and a bar graph of the level of CPI.
A country can be selected through mouse interaction by clicking on the country on the map or on its entry in the list.

The 5 World Bank Development statistics I've chosen are then represented for that country in a linked bar chart view in the bottom left hand side, with a bar for each statistic percentage scaled according to the maximum and minimum across all of Africa and all time periods. Hovering over these bars will give you a time series of that statistic across the entire time period, and show you the specific number for each stat.

A time slider at the bottom of the screen allows you to move between time periods, and as with the country selection, all data is dynamically reset and resized, with the linked bar chart view easing to resize, so that countries and time periods are more easily compared.

The current year is shown at the top left of the screen, and a key to the color scale is shown on the right.
